The purpose of this case study is to examine the effects of brief Korean Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction(K-MBSR) program on perceived stress, depression, Korean MAAS, & glucose leve in four diabetes type II. The subjects are outpatients diagnosed as DM type ¥± by medical doctor in General Hospital, Chungbuk, South Korea. K-MBSR program is adapted by Chang, Hyun-Gab(2005) from Kabat-Zinn¡¯s original MBSR. This program consisted of informal meditation(eating meditation, walking meditation) and formal meditation(body scan, breathing, hatha yoga). After the weekly 100-minutes sessions, the patients were given the audio-cassettes containing the instructions for meditation and the illustrations showing hatha yoga exercises, and required to practice the meditation at home for at least 6 days a week, which they learned from every session and submit the daily meditation exercise reports as a homework when coming for the next session. Two patients completed the three sessions, and the other two patients attended the
two sessions. Before and after the MBSR treatment, these cases were checked about their glucose level(2 hours after meal) and recorded their responses on the perceived stress scale, Korean depression scale(KDS-30), and Korean MAAS scale. After the program, two patients in MBSR program have shown the reduction of the glucose level(2hours after meal) to the normal level. The scores on the three scales were inspected visually to show no remarkable differences. To find out the treatment factors leading the therapy success, this case study examined the changes in-detail over the program in each case. This case study suggests that Korean MBSR could be the promising treatment modality for the diabetes type ¥±, although this preliminary results would be difficult to generalize due to the limitations of small sample
size. Future directions for research with more subjects and treatment sessions were suggested.
